Operation Safe Driver Week—an annual campaign conducted by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)—is scheduled to take place from July 13-19, 2025. The CVSA created this seven-day initiative to help detect and prevent unsafe behaviors on the road among commercial drivers. It’s important for trucking employers to be aware of this event and prepare accordingly.
Event Overview
During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement agencies throughout North America typically participate in increased traffic safety enforcement, focusing on the following unsafe driving behaviors:
- Driving aggressively or while distracted
- Following too closely
- Making improper lane changes
- Neglecting to obey traffic control devices
- Failing to use a seat belt
- Driving while fatigued or impaired
As usual, drivers found in violation of any safety regulations could be issued a warning or citation. In addition to heightened traffic safety enforcement, this campaign calls for increased awareness of safe driving practices. Law enforcement agencies, transportation officials and motor carriers (including trucking employers) are encouraged to take this time to provide commercial drivers with valuable resources on safe driving behaviors.
2025 Campaign Focus
Each year, the CVSA identifies a specific topic to address during Operation Safe Driver Week. This year’s campaign focuses on commercial drivers engaging in reckless, careless or otherwise dangerous driving practices. Reckless driving is defined as operating a vehicle without due care, attention or reasonable consideration for other motorists or pedestrians. Any person who drives with willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others or property is deemed reckless. Law enforcement agencies across the United States will participate in this campaign. Speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving are all high-risk driving behaviors that will be targeted during the initiative.
What Trucking Employers Can Do
Trucking employers must prepare for Operation Safe Driver Week by educating their employees on safe driving behaviors and ensuring compliance with applicable transportation legislation throughout their organizations. Here are some simple reminders that trucking employers can share with their drivers in preparation for this event:
- Comply with all company driving policies and road safety standards.
- Wear your seat belt at all times.
- Obey posted speed limits and other traffic signage.
- Use proper signaling to give nearby motorists plenty of warning before changing lanes.
- Don’t use your cellphone or other handheld devices while driving.
- Avoid driving when you feel fatigued or are impaired by alcohol or drugs.
- Maintain proper following distances from the vehicles in front of you, especially in adverse weather conditions.
- Stay focused on the road ahead and limit potential distractions behind the wheel.
