National Burn Awareness Week is every year during the second full week of February.
It’s important to acknowledge burn awareness week for three main reasons:
- It increases awareness – This is a great opportunity to educate and inform others on the prevention and care of various levels of burns.
- It reduces risks – By learning about preventative measures, it reduces the risks of workplace and at home burns by becoming better equipped to handle and minimize potential risks.
- Survivors are recognized – During the week is a great time to honor and encourage survivors of burns to commend their courage.
Stay ahead of mistakes and danger by taking these steps to prevent burns:
- Fire alarms – Ensure your workplace and office have fire alarms installed properly.
- Inspect danger zones – Have routine checks of high-risk areas such as chimneys, fireplaces, and electrical connections to prevent burn scenarios.
- Throw away damaged appliances – If any appliances have frayed wires and faulty connections, it is a sign to get rid of them.
- Avoid hot spills – Keep any hot liquids and solids away from any edges of tables, and make sure safety clothes and gloves are used while handling these hot items.
- Prepare for emergencies – Ensure that fire drills are performed, and escape routes are established.
